Book Review: My Favourite Mistake by Marian Keyes

First of all, my feelings about this book are mostly due to my own mistake, and as an avid reader with thousands of books under my belt, I have to admit it is a rookie mistake I shouldn’t have made. This is my first Marian Keyes book, and although I’ve seen her name and numerous titles many times on library bookshelves and reading blogs, I just hadn’t gotten around to reading one of hers myself. And then, I started with Book #7 in a series! Foolish at best. I had no idea that My Favourite Mistake was a series and that I was stumbling in with no background, no back stories, no idea who anyone was or used to be or would become.

So, I did not enjoy this book. The beginning of the book was enjoyable, and I was 100% dialed in to Anna’s NYC life, both business and personal. The whole work from home was spot on. But, I had a difficult time connecting with the characters after Anna returned to Ireland. I didn’t understand who the sisters were and what part they played in the family structure. And we all know that birth order and personalities formed in early childhood have a lot to do with family dynamics.

Will I try again? Yes, indeed. You don’t get to be a writer who has sold over 22 million (MILLION) copies worldwide for nothing!

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for the ARC. I promise I will start from the beginning with Marian Keyes and redeem myself!

  1. my favourite or rather biggest mistake was reading this book. I did not laugh once, found it extremely patronising and can’t believe I got to almost the end before giving up completely. It portrays women as stupid, pathetic I could go on. Never have I met in my 70 odd years such a pathetic bunch of women. Don’t get me started in the stereotyping especially of the men, Irish or not. Bitterly disappointed at this book will not read another Marian Keyes book.

    1. Yes, this was confirmation that not every book is meant for every person!
